If you own oaks anywhere in the Waco area, oak wilt should be on your radar. It's the most destructive tree disease in Central Texas, and one of the easiest ways it spreads is through fresh pruning cuts made at the wrong time of year. Here's what every homeowner from Temple to Belton needs to know.
What Oak Wilt Is
Oak wilt is a fungal disease that clogs a tree's water-conducting vessels, causing leaves to wilt and the tree to die — often within weeks for red oaks. It spreads two ways: above ground by tiny sap-feeding beetles that carry fungal spores from infected trees to fresh wounds, and below ground through the interconnected root systems that live oaks naturally form, letting it move from tree to tree across a neighborhood.
The Golden Rule: Don't Prune Oaks February Through June
Sap beetles are most active and the fungus is most infectious from February through June. Avoid pruning oaks during this window unless it's a true safety emergency. The safest time to prune oaks in Central Texas is the heat of mid-summer or the coldest part of winter, when beetles are dormant.
Always Paint Fresh Oak Cuts
Whenever an oak is cut — pruning, storm damage, or accidental wounds — paint the wound immediately with pruning paint or latex paint. A fresh cut on an oak is an open door for those sap beetles, and sealing it within minutes dramatically lowers the risk. This applies year-round, but it's non-negotiable in spring.
Use Clean Tools
The fungus can ride on saw blades. We clean and disinfect tools between trees so we're never carrying the disease from one yard to the next.
If You Suspect Oak Wilt
Look for a sudden browning that runs from the leaf edges inward, a thinning canopy, or a line of dying oaks marching across adjacent properties. Early action — trenching to sever root connections, careful removal of infected trees — can save the rest. Our experienced arborists know how oak wilt behaves in our area and will give you a straight answer.
Raymundo Tree Service has served Central Texas since 2015 and treats every oak with oak wilt in mind. Learn more about our tree trimming and pruning service.
